Cotton Yield Decline

In 2030, world cotton production is likely to decline by 5-12%, due to climate change, the Commonwealth of Australia scientific and industrial research organization said.

Low water use is the main reason for the possible decline in cotton production, according to a report by the Commonwealth of Australia scientific and industrial research organization.

Australia's cotton industry is mainly concentrated in eastern New South Wales and Queensland. In recent years, Australia's cotton industry has been hit by drought.

Cotton production in Australia has been significantly reduced, due to the drought in recent years and the decrease in the allocation of irrigation water.

In the 2007-08 cotton season, Australia's lint yield is estimated to fall to 126 thousand tons, 274 thousand tons in the 2006-07 cotton season and 597 thousand tons in the 2005-06 cotton season.

In the 2008-09 cotton season, output forecast will rebound to 428 thousand tons, but this will depend on rainfall and long-term production prospects.

Climate change may reduce water consumption in other parts of the world, such as the southern and western United States, the Mediterranean, South Africa and western South America, but the available water in China may rise.

Recent reports indicate that global warming may affect agriculture in many countries in the coming years.
