The EU Takes Effect By Disabling The Draft DMF.
In January 29th, EU Member States adopted the draft resolution to ensure that consumer products containing two methyl fumarate will not be put into the European market. At present, the resolution is still in the European Parliament review stage, and is expected to come into effect before May 1st.
The draft clearly stipulates that if the content of two methyl fumarate in consumer goods or its components exceeds 0.1 mg / kg, or the product itself has declared its content of two methyl fumarate, it will be identified as a product containing two methyl fumarate, which will be prohibited from entering the EU market for circulation and sales.
The two methyl fumarate (DMF) is usually used as an antiseptic and mildew inhibitor, and is often used in the production, storage and pportation of leather, footwear and textiles. But since October last year, the European Union has announced more cases of skin allergies, acute eczema and burns caused by consumers' exposure to shoes containing two methyl esters of fumarate and leather sofa. The European Union has also carried out research and analysis since then, and finally issued the above draft and limited standards.
Before the adoption of the EU draft, France and Belgium have taken concrete measures to prohibit the import and sale of shoes and seats containing two methyl fumarate. Spain also stipulates that any product that comes into contact with skin contains two methyl fumarate. Moreover, since the end of last year, many Chinese products have been detained by France and other countries due to excessive content of two methyl fumarate.
Fumaric acid two methyl ester is widely used in domestic products. Quite a lot of products such as shoes, leather furniture and home textiles will be packed with moisture-proof bags containing this component to prevent moisture and mildew.
In Wenzhou, Haining and other places, leather products are traditional export products. In Wenzhou alone, the export of footwear products reached 276 million US dollars in 2008. Textiles are Zhejiang's export advantage products, with an annual export volume of about 40 billion. The above export products account for a large share of the EU market.
What is more worrying is that, according to the data, fumaric acid two methyl ester is widely used in food, grain, feed, cosmetics, tobacco and other antiseptic and mildew and preservation because of its low toxicity, strong bacteriostatic ability, antibacterial species and environmental impact. Therefore, the EU's ban on all consumer products containing two methyl fumarate will bring great adverse effects to the related industries in Zhejiang province.
Faced with the great challenge of the ban, the inspection and Quarantine Department reminded relevant export enterprises to make timely adjustments to replace them with more environmentally friendly and healthy moisture-proof and mould proof products, so as to meet the requirements of the draft and actively communicate with foreign customers to reduce the impact of the draft on the export of products. In the near future, the inspection and quarantine departments will also strengthen inspection and supervision of the relevant enterprises in the area to avoid the loss of unqualified products to the European Union, resulting in greater economic and reputation losses.
